NPORS: A Complete Guide to NPORS Qualifications
The safety of employees working on construction sites should be the top priority of any manager, supervisor or individual, but safety cannot be achieved without rigorous training and the application of advanced skills. One such skill is the ability to operate machinery according to the appropriate procedure.
NPORS qualifications provide modern, efficient and flexible machinery training options for your on-site team. But, what is it and how could it benefit your workforce?
Join HLS Training as we dissect the basics.
What is NPORS?
NPORS refers to the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme. It is a certification body that assesses the skills and competence of individuals operating various types of machinery in the construction industry.
The qualification is recognised by HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and proves that organisations have fully trained instructors with the ability to meet the needs of the company through the certification of employees.
This scheme was established to ensure that plant operators meet nationally accepted standards and possess the necessary skills to operate equipment safely and efficiently.
What is an NPORS card?
An NPORS card is the tangible proof of an individual’s competence and qualification to operate specific types of machinery. It is identifiable evidence that the cardholder has undergone the necessary training and assessments to operate plant machinery safely.
There are multiple types of NPORS card that can be issued in line with regulations including:
- Traditional NPORS Card
- NPORS CSCS Plant Operator Card
What’s the difference between NPORS and CPCS?
While NPORS and the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) serve similar purposes, there are key differences between the two.
NPORS is known for being more flexible and accommodating, accepting a broader range of training providers and offering a simpler renewal process. On the other hand, CPCS is often considered more stringent in its assessment criteria and is the preferred choice for some construction companies.
One of the more notable differences is the requirement for testing. CPCS testing can only occur on an accredited CPCS testing site, whereas NPORS testing takes place on your construction site, using your equipment and plant machinery.
How much is an NPORS course?
The cost of an NPORS course can vary depending on the type of machinery and the level of qualification sought. It’s important to consider this as an investment in both personal development and career advancement.
How long does it take to get an NPORS card?
The duration to obtain an NPORS card depends on various factors, including the individual’s prior experience and the level of qualification sought. A novice operator may need a more extensive training period compared to an experienced worker seeking a higher-level qualification.
Generally, the process involves training, assessment, and the issuance of the NPORS card upon successful completion.
